WHAT’S MY SKILL LEVEL
Quite often members ask what’s my skill level? After participating in lessons, leagues and drop-in, it’s inevitable that your skill level has changed…hopefully for the better. Detailed instructions on how to determine your skill level—including the USA Pickleball rubric to guide how your level is determine, how well and how consistently you execute different shots (forehand, backhand, serve, dink, third shot, and volley), as well as the ability to understand strategy, etc. can be found online.
As always, we’re here to help so don’t hesitate to ask for guidance when signing up for specialized lessons and leagues so you’re sure you’re exactly where you need to be and get the most out of your time at the club—everyone at every skill level prefers competitive and exciting matches no matter what their level.
SUMMER HOURS
Change in club hours for summer—the great weather is here, the kids are out of school and members are flocking to vacation spots here and abroad. As a result, we’ve shortened our hours and are closing at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays. In the unlikely event that courts are not booked we will close early so it’s always a good idea to call. Stay tuned as we’ll no doubt revert back to regularly scheduled hours come September.
SUBBING
As the number of leagues grow and participation expands, it’s more important than ever that we formalize the sub process. Currently, members use TeamReach to find and fill spots as needed.
Beginning this Fall, in order to better manage sub requests, we will be requesting a captain be named for each league—this person will help coordinate sub coverage when necessary. To that end, Pickles will compile a comprehensive list based on skill level and availability (you cannot register as a sub for multiple levels).
There is no fee to be added to the sub list and no guarantee that you will be called to fill in. We appreciate your help as we move forward with this initiative and are confident that it will result in more competitive and consistent play.

COACH SPOTLIGHT: Riley Stockwell
*How long have you been playing pickleball?
About 5 years on and off
*What brought you to Pickles and why did you join the staff as an instructor?
I was so curious about the first all Pickleball club, I had to check it out. When I walked through the doors Lisa greeted me with a t-shirt and said I was the 1000th person to walk through the door. It was a funny and memorable moment.
Shortly after, I was talking to Wanda about pickleball tournaments and hosting some events there myself simply because it’s fun and there aren’t enough events in our segment of the country. They started picking my brain and we got to talking. I showed them the PPA and APP tours (and how to put them on the TVs at pickles) and all of a sudden, they were exposed to the whole world of competitive Pickleball that existed! I was a DUPR ambassador at the time so I introduced them to this new rating system—it didn’t take long for Lisa, Wanda and Dustin to connect with DUPR and become major collaborators.
Lisa and Wanda were also very kind in allowing me to teach a couple practice classes while I prepared for my PPR certification test. People responded very positively to my instruction and I remember Wanda saying “after your PPR certification were going to have to get you in here”. That made me feel very good and shortly after I became a coach and the DUPR ratings pro!
*What do you love most about teaching at Pickles?
I love the people! I’ve met so many new and wonderful faces I look forward to seeing every time I’m there. It’s very exciting to have players messaging me and/or coming up to tell me about their latest triumphs in tournaments or significant improvements they are proud of.
*What’s your favorite class to teach and why?
I like Play With the Pro. It’s the perfect time to cut loose, give some instruction, and get some friendly trash talk going in class
*What’s a fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
I’m a professional guitar player. I’ve toured across the country and I’m a recording artist.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Tory & Donny Fait
*How’d you meet?
I was friends with Tory’s older brothers in our neighborhood in Marshfield Hills. When Tory was looking into schools to attend, she contacted me about going to Johnson & Whales University for Culinary Arts which I am a graduate. We got together and the attraction was immediate and here we are 36 years later!
*How long have you been playing pickleball and what attracted you to the sport?
We’ve both been playing pickleball for just over two years. We started playing in Florida at our home in Islamorada. At first we were playing on an old beat up basketball court with taped lines. Our association has since got together and put in two nice regulation courts. We also have several nice places to play nearby as well.
*How often do you play pickleball together?
When home in Marshfield we try and play pickleball at least two or three times a week. When in Florida we play almost daily, weather permitting.
*Who is the more competitive player? the more skilled? the more social?
Between the two of us I would say that we are both just as competitive. I’m a bit more skilled and Tory is definitely the more social one!
*When you’re not working (or playing pickleball), how do you enjoy spending your free time?
In our free time we both enjoy traveling, boating, fishing, biking, cooking and entertaining.
*What’s something about you not many people know?
Some may not know that Tory and I owned and worked at Silent Chef Catering in Scituate for 28 years before closing in 2018. Tory now works as a Flight Attendant for Delta Airlines. I am now semi-retired, baking and selling Artisan breads and other treats from our permitted residential kitchen in Marshfield. I also have a small seasonal farm stand where I sell fresh veggies and flowers from the garden.
*What brought you to Pickles and what keeps you coming back?
We both fell in love with Pickles the first time we walked in! The courts are some of the best that we’ve played on. The owners, staff and instructors are always so nice, friendly, and willing to go out of their way help. The other members are such a fun, diverse, and competitive group to play with. We have met many new friends who live on the South Shore. What a great club!
FRIENDLY REMINDER
Just a friendly reminder, a credit card is required to register for classes, clinics, lessons and/or to book a private court. Also, due to many no shows, we will be enforcing our 24-hour cancellation policy, after which you will be charged.
